About Aces of War

Aces of War is a historical media project focused on preserving the stories of fighter pilots, aircraft, and aerial campaigns that shaped World War II. Using cinematic podcasts, illustrated comics, pilot biographies, aircraft profiles, historical analysis, and interactive digital experiences, Aces of War brings aviation history to life for a new generation of enthusiasts, students, veterans, and historians.

The project is built on the idea that history is most meaningful when told through the stories of those who lived it. Every victory claim, aircraft serial number, and combat mission represents a young pilot facing incredible challenges in dangerous skies. From the Eastern Front to the Pacific, from the Battle of Britain to the last campaigns over Germany and Japan, Aces of War looks at both the machines and tactics of aerial warfare and the courage, sacrifice, leadership, and humanity of the pilots.

Aces of War is committed to historical accuracy. The team works hard to verify aircraft markings, operational records, victory claims, combat reports, and historical context using primary and secondary sources whenever possible. Whether looking at the careers of Erich Hartmann, Ivan Kozhedub, Richard Bong, Saburō Sakai, Pappy Boyington, or many other legendary aviators, Aces of War aims to separate myth from reality and share these stories in a way that is both engaging and responsible.

Aces of War uses different types of storytelling to reach a wide audience. The podcast features long-form stories and interviews that put listeners in the shoes of history's greatest fighter pilots. The comic series turns real events into visually rich collector editions to spark interest in aviation and military history. The Flight Archive is a growing library of pilot biographies, aircraft details, combat records, and campaign histories. Interactive features like Ace vs. Ace let visitors compare pilots, aircraft, theaters, and careers across different nations and time periods.

About the Creator

Aces of War was created by Ray Via, a veteran, aviation enthusiast, military historian, and lifelong student of military history. Ray served in the United States Air Force Reserve as a C-5 Galaxy Crew Chief at Dover Air Force Base, where he developed a firsthand appreciation for military aviation, aircraft maintenance, and the professionalism required to keep aircraft mission ready.

Beyond his military service, Ray has spent decades studying military history, with particular emphasis on aviation, World War II, leadership, strategy, and combat operations. His research interests span the major air campaigns of the Second World War, including the Eastern Front, the Pacific Theater, the Battle of Britain, strategic bombing campaigns, naval aviation, and the evolution of fighter tactics. He has conducted extensive research into aircraft development, pilot biographies, operational records, and campaign histories, building large historical databases covering aircraft, squadrons, serial numbers, and combat operations.

Ray's family history also reflects a deep connection to military service. Members of the Via family served in the American Revolutionary War, the Civil War, World War I, World War II, and the Cold War era. This multi-generational tradition of service helped inspire the creation of Aces of War as a way to preserve and share the stories of those who served before their experiences are lost to time.

Professionally, Ray has built a successful career in technology and large-scale program management while maintaining a lifelong passion for military history and education. Through Aces of War, he combines his experience in research, project leadership, digital technology, and storytelling to create a platform that makes complex historical topics accessible and engaging.

The long-term vision for Aces of War extends beyond podcasts and comics. The project is designed to become a comprehensive historical resource featuring pilot archives, aircraft databases, educational materials, documentaries, games, interactive learning tools, and community engagement programs. By combining rigorous historical research with modern media formats, Aces of War seeks to ensure that the legacy of the men and women who shaped aviation history continues to educate and inspire future generations.

Real Heroes. Real Aircraft. Legendary Battles.

That mission remains at the heart of everything Aces of War creates.
